A Doctor Argent Case
“You are Doctor Augustus Argent?” the honey-haired young woman asked with urgency in her tone, though it was clear she already knew. “I need your help.”
The Doctor was easy to identify—tall, lean, and with long silver hair, mustache, and spade beard that gave him the aspect of an American frontier hero though he was as British as one could be. He might have been thirty or sixty years of age, though there were suspicions that he was much older.
He was, in fact, Minister Without Portfolio who investigated occult affairs for our good Queen Victoria. In that capacity I had been seconded to him from my captaincy in the Horse Guards Regiment after my sister had died at the claws of an occult were-creature in Scotland.
